EXCERPT : This level serves to introduce the dancer to fundamental techniques.
When teaching a dancer the teacher must deconstruct advanced movements and begin training from the outside in or inside out for strength, mobility, and articulation. It is therefore necessary to use tendu as the first movement toward straight kicks, and retirés as the first movement toward extensions and kicks which ultimately leads to extreme possibilities.
As the hands are used throughout the day in a nimble manner it is probably better to focus articulation to the feet, ankles, and legs and the use of the upper body to initiate movements such as spirals and contracts or clear weight changes. Thus, we work on tendu, retire, extension and movement. There is no replacement for repetition and it may take dancers thousands of times to perfect movements like controlled tendus. Do not leave basics and warm ups out of your everyday practice.
